Lot Essay

Treize Lithographies: Portraits d’acteurs & d’actrices was initially conceived as a book with lithographic portraits accompanied by biographical sketches of Parisian actresses and actors. The lithographs were completed in 1898, but the exact date of publication of the first edition is unclear. A second edition of forty copies was published in 1913. In the end the publication was issued without any text. The album features portraits of many of the great names of the Parisian stage, including Sarah Bernhardt and May Belfort, whom Lautrec had immortalized in posters. The three actresses in our sheets are: Jeanne Garnier (1852-1939), operetta star; Louise Balthy (1867-1925), dancer and showgirl; Marie-Louise Marsy (1866-1942), theatre actress.
