Lot Essay
Nelly mit Spielzeug is closely related to Otto Dix's painting of 1925 of the same subject now at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. The portrait depicts the artist's two-year-old daughter, Nelly, as she sits at a wooden tabletop before an assortment of toys. This childhood scene contrasts sharply with Dix's often socially critical paintings of the 1920s, although even the figure of the little girl has the uncanny intensity so characteristic of the artist's graphic works of the period.
