President of the Accademia di San Luca, founded in 1593 initially under the direction of Federico Zuccari (1540/1541-1609), Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) is best known for his sensitive portraits, often executed in pencil. The Biblioteca Marucelliana in Florence holds his portraits of Galileo (1564-1642) and Caravaggio (1571-1610). Ottavio Leoni is the only artist known to executed a portrait of Caravaggio, as all other depictions of the painter are self-portraits.

The attribution of the painting to Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) was confirmed by Yuri Primarosa in a report dated 29 May 2024.

Président de l'Accademia di San Luca fondée en 1593 sous la direction initiale de Federico Zuccari (1540/1541-1609), Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) est connu avant tout pour ses portraits sensibles, souvent exécutés au crayon. La Biblioteca Marucelliana à Florence conserve ses portraits de Galilée (1564-1642) et du Caravage (1571-1610). Ottavio Leoni est le seul artiste ayant réalisé un portrait du Caravage, toutes les autres représentations du Caravage étant des autoportraits.

L'attribution du tableau à Ottavio Leoni (1578-1630) a été confirmée par Yuri Primarosa dans un dossier d'étude daté du 29 mai 2024.
