Lot Essay

The same crest is found on a pair of candlesticks of 1741 by Paul de Lamerie, on loan from the Gilbert Collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum (LOAN:GILBERT.654-2008). It has been suggested that the crest is that of the Ridge family of Tyning House, Sussex, however, it is more likely to be the crest of Rudge, borne by a number of families by that name, as their crest is blazoned ‘Out Of A Mural Coronet Or, Two Arms Erect Vested Gules., The Hands And Cuffs Proper, Supporting An Escutcheon Argent’. Sleeves and cuffs are visible on the crest engraved here and on the Gilbert Collection candlesticks.
