Lot Essay

This painting was presumably one of a pair of views of Venice acquired from Otto Mündler, a scholar and dealer based in Paris. In the 1850s Sir Charles Eastlake employed him as the travelling agent of the National Gallery, London, to support the acquisition of Italian paintings. Mündler spent several years travelling throughout Europe, keeping an extensive and fascinating diary of the many pictures he saw (see J. Anderson, 'Introduction to the Travel Diary of Otto Mündler', Walpole Society, LI, 1985).

The composition is closely related to Canaletto's Grand Canal: the Rialto Bridge from the North, one of a series of twelve views of the Grand Canal commissioned by Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, and subsequently acquired by George III (London, Royal Collection).
