Lot Essay

The ability of a split-seconds chronograph's superposed seconds hand to 'catch up' with the main chronograph hand is referred to as rattrapante in French. Comparative time measurements, however, could not always be used in a truly useful manner and were restricted to 60 seconds.

Lange created a whole new era in mechanical timekeeping with the Double Split, the first flyback chronograph with a double rattrapante mechanism in history. It enables lap-time recording, comparative timing, and fastest/slowest lap measurements in addition to the standard stopwatch features of a traditional chronograph. It was the first wristwatch to extend rattrapante functionality to events lasting up to 30 minutes, thanks to its additional flyback minute counter. This made the complication both technically groundbreaking and practically useful.
