A GERMAN ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
MARK OF MARC ANDRÉ SOUCHAY, HANAU, CIRCA 1790
Ingot shaped with engine-turned reeded pattern framed by bands decorated with beads and ovolo enamelled in opaque white and dark blue, marked in cover and base with maker's mark MS and marks resembling those for Paris 1768-1774; on flange: Hanau bird head 18ct gold control mark; later French control mark

Marc Souchay (1730-1811) was with his brother Esais (1723-1791) the son of the Huguenot goldsmith Jacques Souchay de la Duboissière who set up in Hanau in 1714 after training in Paris and Geneva. After their father's death, Esaias took over the workshop joined by Marc in the 1750s using as their hallmarks 'FS'. The business thrives for 30 years until Esaias retired in 1789 leaving his brother in charge until his death in 1811.

Marc Souchay (1730-1811) est avec son frère Esaias (1723-1791) le fils du huguenot Jacques Souchay de la Duboissière qui s’établit à Hanau en 1714 après avoir travaillé à Paris puis à Geneve. Au décès de leur père c’est Esaias l’aîné qui reprend l’atelier paternel rejoint par Marc André après 1750. Ils utilisent alors comme poinçon ‘FS’. L’affaire va prospérer et être active jusqu’à ce que Esaias se retire en 1789 laissant a Marc la charge de l’entreprise qu’il assume jusqu’à son décès en 1811.
