Lot Essay
Lots 30-33 belong to a group of portraits of unidentified Dutch army officers painted between 1637 and 1639, when the artist was living in The Hague. Although included in Judson and Ekkart's catalogue under autograph paintings, the authors acknowledge that they were most likely products of collaboration between the artist and his studio (op. cit., p. 315). The pictures were in the collection of the Earl of Romney at The Mote, near Maidstone in Kent, and subsequently acquired with the house by Viscount Bearsted, who sold them in 1929. One portrait from the group is now in the collection of the University of Notre Dame, Snite Museum of Art.
