Lot Essay

A small figure rises from a crown of leaves, part child and part woodland presence. Mori Girl evokes northern forests where solitude, imagination, and quiet watchfulness intertwine. Such atmosphere recalls the rough-hewn wooden figures carved from forest timber by Enku (Lot 5) during his travels through northern Japan, landscapes not far from the hometown of Yoshitomo Nara in Aomori. The woodland child also resonates with the gentle forest spirits of My Neighbor Totoro (Lot 32) and the ecological vision of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Lots 21 and 36). Nara’s rounded cheeks and calm expression suggest a figure quietly rooted in the landscape. Across centuries and media, the forest remains a place where youthful presences encounter wonder, solitude, and transformation.
