Although Picasso, together with his printer Roger Lacourière (1892-1966), took this large, compositionally as well as technically complex plate through a sequence of five states and even experimented with negative printing as the present example shows, no edition was ever produced. It seems that Picasso at some considered the subject better suited for lithography and had Fernand Mourlot create a transfer onto a lithographic zinc plate, of which two, possibly three impressions were taken. Also in this technique, no edition was ever realised.
The print is hence extremely rare in any state or version: Baer only records a total of 16 impressions taken from the etching plate in different states.
