Descriptif du lot

The work of Studio Ghibli is often associated with the fantastical—forest spirits, flying castles, and magical worlds. However, among the studio’s most enduring achievements is a film that refuses escape entirely. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) is adapted from Nosaka Akiyuki’s novel of the same name, set in Kobe amidst the waning months of the Pacific War. The film follows, in tender and devastating detail, two orphaned siblings trying to survive bombings and the ever-present social hardships of the period. The film takes on a strikingly realist tone, filtered through the director Takahata Isao’s firsthand experiences. He says, “I was ten, in fourth grade, in 1945 when Okayama was air raided… my older sister and I ran away together…It doesn’t seem real: the fire bombs don’t really explode, and you don’t think they will spread until they do. I reproduced this experience in the film, especially in the day bombing scene. It was a quiet and strange.” (Interview with Director, Grave of the Fireflies 2002 “Collector’s Series” 2-Disc set release)
The present lot depicts the two children running through an incendiary sunset, recalling romantic tropes of figures against the vast sky. The image appears in a sequence where Seita carries Setsuko on his back, returning to their makeshift shelter from the police station (01:06:08). Despite the largely melancholy context of the film, the cel conjures the vibrant idyll of childhood. Scenes such as this remained a point of focus for Takahata. An aria within the film’s grim recitative, this lot holds a moment where action stops and raw sentiment is sustained.
