Lot Essay

Gérôme modeled his , also known as the , in 1890 and exhibited it at the the following year. According to Ackerman, the original version, shown again at the in 1893, was 95 cm. high and was executed in Gerome's signature polychrome style with a body of marble, ivory torso, neck, hands and feet and applied with semi-precious stone 'jeweling'. As with the majority of Gérôme's sculptural , the was subsequently cast by the Siot-Decauville foundry and was edited in three sizes, the present cast being an example of mid-scale version.
