Lot Essay

The facial features of the sitter are similar to those in Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's Virgin of the Rosary in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P000975). The subject of the Virgin as a child, however, is not represented in Murillo's oeuvre besides his Education of the Virgin, also in the Prado (inv. no. P000968), where the features of the young Mary are entirely different from those on display here.
