The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has a glue lining and is secure on a keyed strainer. There is scuffing and some associated losses along the extreme edges of the paint surface. Additional cracking follows the impression of the strainer. There is a pronounced craquelure pattern throughout the painting, which has rendered some of the darker areas in the sitter’s hair and in the background illegible. There are areas of unrestored losses throughout the canvas, most notably at the Virgin’s shoulders. An old yellow varnish is visible in areas of the Virgin’s face, and has pooled in some of the craquelure. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some dots of restoration in the flesh tones, as well as some areas of restoration along the extreme edges in the background. This painting may be hung in its present state, but may benefit from restoration and cleaning.
