James Campion (born in London, 1987) is a painter based in Hampshire and working from his studio in South London. A graduate of Camberwell College of Arts (2010), Campion has worked across the spectrum from precise figuration to non-objective abstraction, often dwelling in the space between the two. His work frequently engages in dialogue with art history, drawing on its languages, gestures, and structures.

After Mondrian (2019) is part of a series that takes significant works from art history as its starting point. Based on Piet Mondrian's Lozenge Composition with Two Lines, the painting retains the geometric framework of the original while extending its underlying structure, introducing additional compositional lines that are implicit rather than visible in the source. A muted palette alludes to the primary colours associated with Mondrian's other work, despite the source painting itself being entirely black and white. Rather than treating the original as an image to be reproduced, Campion uses it as a framework within which colour, surface and composition can be explored, balancing fidelity to the source with the freedom to reinterpret it through paint.
