James Campion (born in London, 1987) is a painter based in Hampshire and working from his studio in South London. A graduate of Camberwell College of Arts (2010), Campion has worked across the spectrum from precise figuration to non-objective abstraction, often dwelling in the space between the two. His work frequently engages in dialogue with art history, drawing on its languages, gestures, and structures.

The towel paintings (2026) begin with commercially produced bath towel designs. By appropriating motifs from commercially produced textiles, they quietly revisit a strategy associated with Pop Art, although their interest lies less in consumer culture than in tracing how the language of modernist abstraction migrates between painting and design. The monochrome towel recalls the optical geometry of Victor Vasarely, while the striped design echoes Bridget Riley, suggesting how twentieth-century abstraction has been absorbed into commercial pattern. Returning these designs to painting completes a circular exchange in which modernist art informs design, and design in turn becomes the source for new paintings.
