Lot Essay

This plate was intended for Dix's harrowing series of fifty prints inspired by his experiences serving in World War I, Der Krieg. The portfolio was published in an edition of seventy by Karl Nierendorf, Berlin, in 1924. The present plate however was not included in the publication and no contemporary impressions have survived. Florian Karsch even suspected that the plate remained unprinted at the time.
Forty years later, in 1964, Otto Dix recovered the plate and had a tiny edition of ten impressions printed. It seems likely that Klaus Hegewisch, who had befriended the artist by then, acquired the print directly from him.
