Lot Essay

Albert Stapfer(1802-1892) Albert Stapfer was a French man of means who took to the daguerreotype right away. He is believed to have produced the first ever government funded photography project in France In 1840-1841. Stapfer's own chateau at Talcy was a favorite, and readily accessible, subject of his camera. An impeccable example is offered here—a whole plate depicting the grand façade of the mansion.
