Lot Essay

Patek Philippe is renowned for their accessories from the 1970s but none are rarer and more sought-after than the Golden Ellipse Lighter. These incredible lighters were priced higher than some entry-level watches in the brand’s catalog at the time and came in a variety of precious metals and engraving motifs. With an estimated total production of less than 200 examples, less than a fifth of them are known.

The present Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Lighter reference 9504 is crafted from 18k yellow gold and is adorned with a beautiful ‘Ocean’ motif which has been handcrafted using a rose engine lathe by a master artisan. This meant that there was no room for error such as a single slip or mistake from the engraving operator. The lighter is substantial in both weight and feel, thanks to the precious metal, and its presence and size feels deeply satisfying in hand.
