Lot Essay
This handbuilt piece explores the balance between fragility and strength. The clay has been kept deliberately thin to give a sense of lightness, while still holding its structure. The outer surface is made from a textured clay that evokes sand, while the interior is finished with oxide and glaze to suggest the colour and movement of the sea. The work is inspired by the seashore where I live, particularly the contrast between rough, weathered surfaces and smoother, fluid forms.
Based in Ramsgate, Kent, Bronwen Harrison creates ceramic sculptures inspired by the human body and the natural environment. Working primarily in clay, she is interested in the balance between strength and fragility, growth and decay, and the ways in which forms evolve over time. Living on the Kent coast, Harrison draws much of her inspiration from the shoreline around her home. Observations of coastal forms, textures and patterns are translated into ceramic works that reflect the constant processes of change, erosion and renewal found in nature.
