Lot Essay

The 'Zig Zag' chair was designed by Rietveld in 1934 and the first prototype was manufactured by Gerard A. van de Groenekan in the Netherlands. In the following years, the design was put into production by Metz & Co., a historic department store in Amsterdam retailing glass and porcelain ware, some of which were manufactured abroad, and produced and sold handcrafted furniture. A celebrated design, the 'Zig Zag' chair has been reedited by iconic Italian firm Cassina since 1971 and is still in production today, our examples being early 1970s examples.
