The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This work has been strip lined and removed from its original stretcher. The center bar of the original stretcher has been retained. Under UV there are a few areas of inpainting to the extreme edges, most concentrated along the top extreme edge and a few touches along the left extreme edge as well. Within the body of the lion, there is retouching strengthening the edges of the tail and the two hind legs. There are some retouches in the left rear leg as well. Other than this the body of the lion is apparently free of retouching, though the varnish is slightly opaque which may hinder reading older retouches. The paint is thinly applied in the background in places, but this is not inconsistent with the work's status as a study.
