A WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF ALLEGORY OF SPRING
BY PROF. GUISEPPE LAZZERINI THE YOUNGER (ITALIAN, ? - 1895), CIRCA 1890
Member of an old Carrarese dynasty of sculptors, Lazzerini entered the Carrara Accademia di Belle Arti in 1848 and studied under Ferdinando Pelliccia (1808–1892). In 1853, his marble relief Patroclus Slaying Sarpedon won him a scholarship to Rome, enabling him to study in the workshop of the celebrated sculptor, Pietrò Tenerani (d.1869). Lazzerini soon thereafter returned to Carrara to work in the family studio in the Corso Rosselli, eventually taking it over after the death of his half-brother, Alessandro, in 1862. The strong Neoclassical influence of Tenerani and, in turn, of Tenerani's own mentors, Bartolini (d.1850) and Thorvaldsen (d.1844), can be clearly seen in Lazzerini's work, which included a wide range of subjects for his own works, as well as developing compositions for other Italian and foreign sculptors. His long career culminated in his appointment as Director of the Carrara Academy from 1889 to 1893 and Honorary Professor of the latter in 1894.

This very finely carved marble is in overall good and ready to place condition. The surface with some light wear and surface marks, as to be expected with age and handling, with some faint discoloration towards the base. There are minor signs of pitting and infill, only visible upon close examination, as well as 'nibbled' chips to the edges, such as to the flower garland in her hair and to the leaves by the rocky outcropping. The dove to the figure's proper right shoulder with a well-restored break to its tail and to its right wing. The figure's proper left thumb with a small area of infill to the underside. The marble pedestal disassembles into three sections, with slightly different colorations to each section. The shaft with restored breaks to one top corner and one bottom section with some small associated loss and chips to edges. One lion's paw with a restored break to one toe. Due to the dark nature of the marble these breaks are not immediately noticeable. The base with chips to the corners. Ready to place. 144 kg weight, the statue. 270 kg weight, the pedestal
