ABRAHAM GOVAERTS (1598-1626), JESUS HEALING THE BLEEDING WOMAN IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE, OIL ON PANEL

This wooded, misty landscape with typical Flemish houses is skilfully used by Abraham Govaerts (1598–1626) as the setting for the story of the healing of the bleeding woman. Described in the Gospel according to St Matthew, it is one of Jesus' miracles (9:20–22). A woman who had been suffering from continuous bleeding for twelve years touched Christ's garment with her hand, believing that her gesture would heal her. Jesus, noticing her gesture, turned to the kneeling woman and told her that her faith had healed her.

Most depictions of this biblical passage date from the early Christian period. Examples include the fresco in the catacombs of Rome, the scene on the Brescia reliquary dated around 350 (Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia), and a mosaic in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, whose construction was completed in 526. The subject was rarely taken up by Renaissance and 17th-century artists. It is therefore likely that this painting was a specific commission from a patron who wished to celebrate the recovery of a woman dear to him or her.

Ce paysage boisé, brumeux, aux maisons typiques des Flandres est employé avec habilité par Abraham Govaerts (1598-1626) comme cadre pour l’histoire de la guérison de la Femme hémorroïsse. Décrit dans l’Évangile selon saint Matthieu, c’est un des miracles de Jésus (9, 20-22). Une femme souffrant alors depuis douze ans d'une perte de sang approcha de sa main le vêtement du Christ, croyant que son geste la guérirait. Jésus, apercevant son geste, se tourna vers la femme agenouillée et lui dit que sa foi l’a guérie.

Les représentations de ce passage biblique datent pour la majorité de la période paléochrétienne. Nous pouvons citer par exemple la fresque qui se trouve dans les catacombes de Rome, la scène sur le reliquaire de Brescia daté vers 350 (conservé au Museo di Santa Giulia à Brescia), et une mosaïque dans la basilique Saint-Apollinaire-le-Neuf à Ravenne dont la construction fut terminée en 526. Le sujet fut très peu repris par les artistes de la Renaissance et du XVIIe siècle. Nous pouvons dès lors proposer l’hypothèse que ce tableau soit une commande spécifique d’un ou d’une mécène qui souhaitait célébrer la guérison d’une femme qui lui était chère.

Le tableau est exécuté sur un panneau non parqueté, composé de deux planches horizontales. Des baguettes de bois ont été fixées le long des quatre bords du cadre afin de correctement maintenir le panneau dans le cadre. Celles-ci ne sont pas visibles lorsque le tableau est vu encadré, côté face picturale. L'ensemble est stable.
A l'oeil nu, le tableau a préservé un joli rendu des figures de la partie inférieure droite de la composition.
La jointure de planches susmentionnée est visible au centre de la composition.
Les bruns et les bleus du paysage sont abrasés sur l'ensemble de la composition. On constate un amincissement des couches de matière supérieures dans les végétations et les frondaisons, tout particulièrement dans la partie gauche du paysage.
A l'UV, le tableau se présente sous un épais vernis homogène, ne permettant pas un examen plus approfondi de l'oeuvre.
La matière reste stable.

The painting is executed on panel composed of two horizontally joined boards. Wooden strips have been fixed along the four edges of the frame in order to stabilise the panel. These are not visible from the front. The whole is stable.
The painting presents well in natural light, with the details in the figures in the lower right part of the composition beautifully preserved.
The aforementioned board join can be seen to the centre of the composition.
The browns and blues of the landscape are slightly abraded throughout the composition. There is a thinning of the upper paint glazes in the vegetation and foliage, particularly in the left-hand side of the composition.
Under UV light, the painting appears to have a thick, uniform varnish, which does not allow for a more detailed examination of the work. The paint remains stable.
