Lot Essay

The drawings in this lot and in the two following ones (lot 42 and 43) were part of an album with costume designs produced for operas performed at the Teatro Reale in Turin. Leonardo Marini was born into a family of tailors active for the Savoy House in Turin since the beginning of the 18th Century. He began to design costumes for the theater in 1769 and was employed by King Amedeo III of Sardinia.
Marini’s prolific career as a costume designer is documented by a large number of detailed drawings depicting hundreds of different opera characters. Many of these sheets are in museum collections in Europe and the United States.
