Lot Essay

As a child picking cotton in the fields of rural Georgia, and later while working as a member of a domestic staff, Rowe always envisioned she could be an artist. Following the death of her second husband she began adorning her house and yard in colorful sculptures and drawings. 2041 Paces Ferry Road was her home in Vinings, Georgia, affectionately known as the Playhouse. Once described by the Atlanta Daily World as “a complete artistic explosion,” the Playhouse was itself an immersive environment, adorned with plants, toys, Christmas ornaments, chewing gum sculptures, and her own handmade dolls. In 2041 Paces Ferry Road, her signature appears within the house, situating her home amid the plants, animals, and other elements that formed her Playhouse. It exemplifies how Rowe recalled the joy and energy of childhood in color and subject while weaving narratives through sophisticated composition.
