SIR JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS, BT., P.R.A. (BRITISH, 1829-1896)
Portrait study of Mr R. Stephens of Merton College, Oxford
The present drawing previously belonged to Elizabeth and James Wyatt, the children of James Wyatt, an art dealer and later Mayor of Oxford. Millais made several pictures of members of the Wyatt family and this watercolour was included in an album which also contained sketches and drawings of the Wyatt family, suggesting that it was probably executed while staying with them in Oxford.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The sheet is not laid down but is tipped in around the edges to a supporting sheet of card, which in turn is hinged into a non-acidic mount. There are a few small scattered spots of surface dirt, but the sheet is in very good overall condition, the colours are fresh and strong and it could be hung without further attention.
