Version aboutie d’une esquisse que nous présentons également lors de cette vente (lot 515), la présente huile sur toile témoigne de la réflexion avec laquelle Balthus élabore ses œuvres : 'La confrontation du dessin et du tableau offre un rare témoignage de la patiente approche de Balthus, de la lente conversion d’une image en peinture […]' (cité in Balthus ou Le temps du sablier, ibid.).
A compter du milieu des années 1930 et pendant une décennie, Balthus s’illustre quasi exclusivement dans le genre du portrait. Le présent représente son beau-père, le colonel baron Moritz de Watteville, dont il épouse la fille Antoinette, en 1937 ; année d'exécution de la présente œuvre.
Balthus livre ici un portrait peu conventionnel d’un homme gradé. Le colonel y est représenté dans une posture et tenue décontractées, qui contrastent avec la codification artistique ancestrale du portrait militaire. La carrure imposante, la panoplie militaire, le regard impavide de ces portraits laissent place dans l’œuvre de Balthus à une certaine légèreté. Le regard méditatif, quasi rêveur du colonel baron Moritz de Watteville allié à l’emploi d’une palette réduite, composée essentiellement d’ocres, de noir et d’un camaïeu de vert, véhiculent une douceur contemplative caractéristique de l’artiste.
Si l’approche en est ainsi très personnelle, elle ne s’en révèle pas moins pétrie d’un certain héritage artistique. Formé au Louvre où il copie les tableaux des grands maîtres à l'instar de Poussin – ainsi qu’en Italie, l'artiste ne cesse de se référer à la tradition: 'Sur un fond de paysage à peine esquissé, il obéit au type du portrait complet, isolé sur un fond qui ne mobilise pas l’attention, type cher aux Italiens de la Renaissance (Léonard, Raphaël) mais qui allie le sens du général et de l’observation psychologique […]' (cité in ibid.). Le style dessiné, la planéité des surfaces ainsi que le hiératisme s’inscrit en effet dans cet héritage de la Renaissance et n'est pas sans rappeler Piero della Francesca dont l’œuvre de Balthus a si souvent été rapprochée. L’ouverture en arrière-plan sur un paysage, probablement le jardin de la demeure du colonel, convoque quant à elle les portraits de Gainsborough et leurs paysages poétiques en arrière-plan.
Proche du milieu intellectuel et artistique où se côtoient Picasso, Mondrian, Giacometti, Artaud et Cocteau, Balthus se refuse néanmoins à toute forme d’abstraction ou de stylisation manifeste dans son art. Il est un peintre entièrement figuratif, cherchant une esthétique d’harmonie idéale et une modernité, dans les tableaux historiques qu’il connait depuis les visites du Louvre. Son unicité lui vient de là, lui qui reconnaissait que 'la vraie modernité est dans la réinvention du passé, dans la refonte de l’originalité à partir de l’expérience et des découvertes' (J. Clair, Balthus, 2001, p. 81).
The completed version of a sketch that we are also presenting in this sale (lot 515) this oil on canvas bears witness to the thoughtfulness with which Balthus elaborates his works: 'The confrontation of the drawing and the painting offers a rare testimony to Balthus' patient approach, to the slow conversion of an image into a painting […]' (quoted in Balthus ou Le temps du sablier, ibid.).
From the mid-1930s onwards and for a decade, Balthus worked almost exclusively on the portrait genre. The present work depicts his father-in-law, Colonel Baron Moritz de Watteville, whose daughter Antoinette he married in 1937, the year of the present work.
Here, Balthus delivers an unconventional portrait of a man of rank. The colonel is represented in a relaxed posture and dress, which contrasts with the ancestral artistic codification of the military portrait. The imposing stature, the military panoply, the fearless gaze of these portraits give way in Balthus' work to a certain lightness. The meditative, almost dreamy gaze of Colonel Baron Moritz de Watteville combined with the use of a reduced palette, composed essentially of ochre, black and a cameo of green, convey a contemplative gentleness, characteristic of the artist.
If the approach is thus personal, it is no less anchored in a certain artistic heritage. Trained at the Louvre where he copied the paintings of the great names of the past - such as Poussin - as well as in Italy where he admired the works of the old masters, Balthus never ceased referring to tradition: 'Against a barely sketched landscape background, he obeys to the type of the complete portrait, isolated against a background that does not attract attention, a type dear to the Italians of the Renaissance (Leonardo, Raphael) but which combines a sense of the general and of psychological observation […] (quoted in ibid.)'. The drawn style, the flatness of the surfaces as well as the hieraticism is part of this Renaissance heritage and reminds us of the works of Piero della Francesca to which the work of Balthus has so often been compared. The opening in the background onto a landscape, probably the garden of the colonel’s home, recalls Gainsborough's portraits and their poetic landscapes in the background.
Close to the intellectual and artistic milieu where Picasso, Mondrian, Giacometti, Artaud and Cocteau mingled, Balthus denied any form of abstraction or stylization evident in his art. He is an entirely figurative painter, seeking an aesthetic of ideal harmony and modernity, in the historical paintings that he knows from his visits to the Louvre. His uniqueness comes from there, he acknowledges that 'the true modernity is in the reinvention of the past, in the remaking of the originality from the experience and the discoveries' (J. Clair, Balthus, 2001, p. 81).
