Lot Essay

According to Gilbert Kaplan and Timothy Baum Les Moyens d'Existence belongs to a small group of etchings after colour sketches by Magritte, commissioned by the artist from the master printer Georges Visat to illustrate selected texts. Upon the artist's death, Visat realised Magritte's vision posthumously with the permission of his widow, etching the plates himself according to the artist's instructions. Each etchings bears Magritte's stamped signature, and the studio blindstamp indicating it was sanctioned by the artist's estate.
