Descriptif du lot

Kenneth Riley built much of his career around portrayals of the American West, with a particular focus on frontier narratives and Native American subjects. His work often combines restrained compositions and weathered palettes and, rather than focusing on dramatic action, frequently approaches historical subjects through quieter moments of reflection and endurance.

In The Black Eagle, Riley draws from visual traditions associated with Plains tribes through the inclusion of the teepee, horse, feathered regalia, and ceremonial objects. Positioned at center, the figure’s upright stance and distant gaze give him a sense of authority. Behind him, the large black eagle decorating the teepee becomes an emblematic presence, and the work’s title likely refers as much to the figure himself as to the eagle image behind him, linking the man to the symbolic qualities of the bird: strength, vigilance, and spiritual power. The horse beside him further connects the work to Plains cultural traditions, recalling the importance of horsemanship, mobility, and prestige across many Plains societies. Ochres, warm browns, and luminous passages of dusty lilac bathe the scene in the glowing light of dawn or sunset, creating an atmosphere of reflection, while the flattened forms and stylized details shift the work away from strict historical realism toward a more symbolic vision.
