‘When I use a skull, it’s not because it exists in Bellini or El Greco, but because it makes a certain emotional sense when it’s painted in a certain work. That means it has a certain relation to life, expresses a certain attitude or outlook. I think of my paintings as effecting an attitude which makes life livable for someone else. I don’t think life is too livable in general — too human. I want my painting to make something humanly possible — something that will show you the face of fear yet let you survive. I want it to show you whatever keeps you from being free and thereby makes you free’ – Julian Schnabel

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas, stretcher and attachment are in generally good condition. All elements appear to be present and adhere well to the underlying support. There is some signs of wear to the dropcloth, coherent with the found object. The two right ornaments of the centre frame are missing, coherent with the found object. It is our opinion that the work is in very good condition.
