Lot Essay

The present limited edition Tank Americaine wristwatch was made by Cartier to commemorate the reopening of the Teatro Alla Scala, Milan. Among the most prestigious Opera houses in the world, the La Scala was inaugurated in 1778 but it underwent some major renovation work between 2002 and 2004.

Cartier launched two sets of limited edition of 150 pieces in white gold to commemorate the reopening of this historic cultural institution which was home to renowned operas like Otello by Giuseppe Verdi (1887) and Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini (1904). The present Ref. 2489 is powered by a quartz movement whilst the Ref. 1471 uses a mechanical movement.

Fittingly, the dial is designed to invoke the image of a music sheet and the hour marker at 8 is replaced by treble clef symbol.
