Lot Essay

The present work is a wonderful example of Nash’s intimate landscapes. Executed in watercolour and ink, the drawing depicts a dense thicket of trees crowding a small gravel pit cut into the landscape, presenting both a focal point and a disruption in the landscape. Andrew Lambirth notes how Nash would often search the landscape for gravel pits, ponds and tree stumps to paint, preferring to focus on shapes in the foreground and mid-ground to looking out to the distance (John Nash: Artist & Countryman, Norwich, 2019, p. 271).

We are very grateful to Andrew Lambirth for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
