Lot Essay

In April 1904 Cecil Baring (1864-1934), later 3rd Lord Revelstoke bought Lambay Island and employed Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) to rebuild the island’s main residence. By 1912 Cecil began to assemble a distinguished collection of delftware, slipware, Prattware, and saltglaze stoneware which he displayed at the castle, against an Arts and Crafts backdrop of whitewashed walls and scrubbed oak furniture, typical of Lutyens’ style. After Cecil’s death in 1934 much of the collection was sold by Rupert Baring (1911-1994), 4th Lord Revelstoke, and was dispersed amongst the Ashmolean, Oxford, and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, as well as to some private collectors.
