Lot Essay

The Southern Hemisphere 1521 by Magellan is an interesting and rare watch. This watch features a half globe on the dial displaying the Southern Hemisphere and around the globe is a mother of pearl chapter ring. The map on the dial has a dotted line representing the route Steve Fossett took when he went successfully around the world by himself in a hot air balloon. The case back is engraved, “First Solo RTW Balloon Flight June 19 – July 4, 2002.” The watch is also numbered “No. 1 /1.” The crown is not visible from the front making the watch symmetrical and can be operated easily. From the side this watch has a dome shaped crystal to accommodate the half globe on the dial. This version is cased in 18k gold. The hands wrap around the globe and when looking directly at the watch straight on one does not notice the crystal. This watch has a unique aesthetic and would be great for a person who appreciates craftsmanship, travel, and interesting design.
