Lot Essay

The present lot is a refined, vintage example of a classic pocket watch model borne from a 167 year old partnership between Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co, preeminent names in the world of fine watch and jewelry making. In 1851, Antoine Norbert de Patek arrived in New York seeking out the world’s finest retailers in order to expand and develop an international market for his unrivaled timepieces. Soon Patek, Philippe and Charles Lewis Tiffany were in agreement and Tiffany and Co. became America’s first retailer of Patek Philippe; Patek Philippe became the primary provider of pocket watches for the jewelry magnate. Patek Philippe and Tiffany pocket watches, such as the present lot, developed a particular coterie – with notable luminaries such as Albert Einstein ordering one of his own in 1915. The iconic partnership continues strong into the present – Tiffany opened a Patek Philippe boutique in their flagship 5th Avenue location in 2008. The present lot exemplifies a time when Tiffany and Patek’s partnership was well developed and this classic gold pocket watch would have been at the height of its renown; indeed a staple for any horologic collector with an interest in the rich history of these masters of craftsmanship.
