Lady Katherine Powlett was the daughter of the 6th Duke of Bolton (1720-1794), and later married her cousin, the 3rd Earl of Darlington, Henry William Vane (1766-1842). He was a Whig M.P., Lord Leiutenant of County Durham, and later became and 1st Duke of Cleveland. As a child she was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) with a greyhound in 1777, an image made famous by its engraving in mezzotint by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812).
