The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining which retains good tension. The varnish is cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure and light isolated scuffing due to earlier frame abrasion are visible in natural light. There is a small puncture/pressure mark in the rabbit’s tail. The varnish fluoresces green under ultraviolet light, though more recent areas of restoration are nevertheless apparent. These include a recent intervention to reinforce the contours of the rabbit’s legs against the musket barrel and a somewhat earlier campaign to address losses in the boy’s flesh tones. Further earlier interventions cannot be ruled out. The painting’s appearance would likely be enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment.
