The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The large canvas is supported with a wax lining. The varnish is yellowed and dirty. The surface is uneven with several large cracks, both vertically and horizontally oriented, visible throughout the composition. Some of the cracks, such as ones above the Virgin’s head and in the putto at upper right, have separated; however the paint surface appears to be stable. Craquelure is visible in some places and discolored retouches are visible to areas over the putto at upper right and in scattered areas throughout. Areas of damage are visible along the lower edge and on the lower part of the virgin’s robe. Ultraviolet light does not penetrate the old varnish. The painting appears to not have been cleaned in many years, but could be displayed in its current condition.
