Lot Essay

The model for the present composition was first exhibited in plaster at the 1882 Grand Salon (no. 4730), accompanied with the original text inscribed on the plaque seen here, and purchased by the city of Paris for 8,000 francs. The sculpture was then executed in marble, exhibited at the salon three years later (no. 4075), and then appropriately placed in the foyer of the théâtre de Gaité, Paris. A popular model, the bronze was cast in 1886 and later exhibited at the 1889 Exposition Universelle where it continued to garner great acclaim.
