The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This single piece oak panel is even and remains stable. An old layer of varnish across the surface reduces the clarity of the darkly painted passages, such as the background, and would benefit from cleaning. A horizontal restoration is visible above the figure’s head in the upper centre. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick layer of obscuring varnish, through which restoration along the edges is discernible and associated with a frame wear, with more recent scattered restoration along the panel grain. The artist’s detail and draughtsmanship remains highly appreciable, with the painting in a very good state of preservation overall.
