Lot Essay

The print is closely related to a drawing in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (inv. no. 9569). Polidoro had presumably developed the composition for a chiaroscuro fresco on the facade of an unidentified palazzo in Rome. Polidoro da Caravaggio was foremost known for his facade decorations, the vast majority of which are lost and only known from Vasari's descriptions, other documentary evidence, and copies.
