Lot Essay

The seal faced is carved with four characters reading Baiyun shanguan. The side of the seal is carved with an inscription signed Jin Tiezhi and dated to the jisi cyclical year, corresponding to 1929.

Jin Tiezhi (c.1893–1973), a native of Jiaxing, Zhejiang, was a pupil of Wu Changshuo and a leading figure in Shanghai’s seal-carving circles during the later Republican period. His style and technique followed those of his teacher, and he maintained close ties with political and calligraphic such as Yu Youren (1879-1964) and Zhang Ji (1882-1947).

Baiyun shanguan, a villa on Mount Mogan, belonged to Republican-era politician Huang Fu (1880–1936), a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Shanghai’s first mayor. Chiang Kai-shek visited the villa several times and spent his honeymoon there with Soong Mei-ling in 1928.
