Lot Essay

With their opulent bombé shaped fronts and parcel-gilt carved decoration, this rare and important pair of commodes typifies the Venetian Rococo taste. The vast majority of related Venetian furniture would have been topped with a faux-marble facsimile painted directly onto the prepared surface, but the present commodes have their apparently original marble tops, another indication of their significance and probably expense.
