Lot Essay

The present picture depicts Duncan Grant’s studio at Charleston, Scotland. The far-right edge of the painting shows the decorative fireplace surround made by the artist. The bookcase displays a number of Grant's personal objects, including a framed pastel work of Venice by Simon Bussy, a small brass hand-bell and a small porcelain pot. At left leans a blue and white Persian tile, which has since been stolen from the artist's studio by a member of the public. It was apparently one of Grant's favorite possessions that had been gifted to him by Lady Ottoline Morrell.
