'I had not seen a photograph of the Ranchos de Taos church and had no idea of its magnificent form before I first viewed it (but did not photograph it) in 1927. The front aspects of the church are moderately impressive….It is the rear elevation that defines this building as one of the great architectural monuments of America. It had been interpreted by numerous painters and photographers, and I could not resist the challenge' (Ansel Adams, as published in: Andrea Stillman, Ansel Adams: Letters and Images 1916-1984, Little, Brown and Co., Boston, 1988, p. 53).
