The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note the title of the recto of the present work will be listed as Head (Blue Negligée) in the Frederick C. Frieseke Catalogue Raisonné being compiled by Nicholas Kilmer.
The present lot has not been examined out of its frame.
This report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation Inc.:
This lot is double-sided and both sides are complete although only one is signed. The subject which is unsigned is in very good condition, however in the past it was considered to be the reverse of the other painting and as such was inscribed “82” in the lower right and BXI (or B#1) in pencil in the upper right. These two inscriptions have been retouched. The primary side is painted quite loosely and the board is showing through in areas within the background, in particular. This is intentional. The board has acidified slightly over time and the color of the board is visible in the chemise on either side of the breasts. There is a small v-shaped scratch in the blouse. There are also a few retouches visible under ultraviolet light in the chest and face of the figure and in the blue background. None of these retouches address real damage. They were applied for cosmetic reasons, to reduce the dark color of the original panel.
