Lot Essay

Fundraising for a National Cultural Center in Washington D.C. began in 1958, led by President Eisenhower and continued by President John F. Kennedy when he took office in 1961. Following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, it was renamed the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as a memorial to President Kennedy, a lifelong supporter and advocate of the arts. Fundraising continued, with benefit events such as the Gala Washington Premiere of My Fair Lady on 1st December 1964. Audrey Hepburn and husband Mel Ferrer represented the theatre at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kennedy Center the following day.
