Georg Forster (1754-1794)

The first edition of Forster's unauthorized account of Cook’s second voyage, an 'important and necessary addition to Cook’s voyages' by the expedition’s naturalist (Hill). Although it was originally intended that Forster’s father, Johann Reinhold, who also sailed on the mission, would write the official account of the voyage, a dispute with the Admiralty arose over payment and this unofficial account written by father and son was issued in March 1777 under the son's name, scooping the official account of the voyage which would come out only six weeks later. Forster became an important figure of the German Enlightenment and was a major influence on Alexander von Humboldt. Hill 625; Sabin 25134.

Two volumes, quarto (292 x 225mm). Large folding engraved map (map with short marginal tear to one creasefold and some offsetting, leaf 2R1 in vol. 1 with large repaired chip at lower gutter just touching catchwords, variable light spotting and soiling, heavier to final few gatherings of vol. 1 and central gatherings of vol. 2). Modern morocco.

James (ink purchase inscription of £2/2/- dated 2 November 1792 on front flyleaf of vol. 1) – inscription in modern hand on front flyleaf of vol. 1 noting Bibliotheca Britannica value of 42 shillings matching the hand used to write out mathematical marginalia on R4v in vol. 2 and notes on verso of final leaf of vol. 2) – Lt Cdr Anrew david (bookplate).
