Lot Essay

This monumental marble bust is a truncated replica of the original full-length figure of Augustus dating from the first decades of the 1st century C.E. Discovered in 1863 in the villa of Livia at Prima Porta, near Rome, the ancient prototype is now housed in the Musei Vaticani, Rome, and represents the pinnacle of early 1st century C.E. imperial sculpture.
