Lot Essay

This print is one of the artist's open-ended series of illustrations for James Joyce's Ulysses. Although Hamilton began to create drawings based on Joyce's complex novel in the late 1940s, the project remained unresolved before 1981, when he began to create large intaglio prints based on his earlier drawings.
